MAGFest X Roundup, Part One

MAGFest X was an absolute blast! Held at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center near Washington DC, the festival was a 4-day whirlwind of videogames, panels and live performances. In 2012, MAGFest was bigger and better in every way — from the massive 24 hour game room and vendor space, to the mind blowing line-up of video game cover bands, chiptune artists, and DJs from all over the world. This was Nophi’s second year tabling at the festival, and we’re already looking forward to next year and beyond!

DAY ONE: THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 2012

The word of the day for Thursday was “drive.” It’s 11 hours from Nophi’s home in Atlanta, GA to the Gaylord Hotel in National Harbor, MD. Driving the east coast at night is not the most exciting thing in the world, but good music and nervous energy propelled the Nophimobile forward through the night. When we finally arrived, it was after midnight, and the exhibition hall was starting to buzz with sleepless festival-goers looking to settle in for a long weekend of gaming and rocking-the-hell-out.

Loading in was not easy! Hotel staff was under-informed about festival details, and there was a 90-minute debacle involving the concierge and the loading dock that kept us from reaching our vendor booth til almost 2:00am! Once we were finally loaded in, we set out in search of delicious Japanese snacks and some red-eye arcade time. Megaman, Katamari, Galaga, Dig Dug — sometime around 7:00 am, there may or may not have been sleep…

Jan 5 – 8, 2012 (Thu – Sun)

Nophi will be returning for our second MAGFest! This year is the 10th anniversary of the festival and promises to be bigger and crazier than ever. As with last year, we will be tabling with our usual faire of electronic music, nerd rawk, and merch — but this year we will also be bringing MANY new products to the table — including vinyl records, download cards, theremins, effects boxes and other crazy DIY music tools! We’ve got some special jams and performances planned this year and will be announcing all updates here!

In the meantime, get pumped with a free download of our MAGFest-exclusive release from last year: Eightest Bits!

MAGFest 9 – Thursday Recap

Well, we drove like hell — 12 hours on the road from snowed-in Atlanta to a surprisingly warmer Alexandria, VA (which is just outside of DC for those of you drawing a geographic blank). The car ride was as one would expect when two grown-ass men decide to go to a video game festival for the weekend: ripe with teenage vernacular, farting, talking about boobs, et al. I mean, anything to help the time pass…

When we finally arrived, we swung by our hotel (which was not the Hilton where the fest was), got our freshness on, and then almost immediately headed to the Hilton to load our wares in. Though it was after midnight on a Thursday when we arrived, there was still plenty of buzz in the lobby, game rooms and panel rooms to get us excited for the following day. One thing we noticed right away was the helpfulness of the all-volunteer festival crew, who were there 24 hours a day to help us with everything from registration, to finding our table, to loading our stuff into storage.

After loading in, and wandering the many different rooms for a an hour or two, we decided to make a good judgement call around 3am and head back to the hotel, stopping only for some much needed sandwiches and Gatorade at the local 7-11. Upon completion of our delicious ‘wiches, we passed out hard and slept like babies, knowing we weren’t going to have to set up our booth until around noon. Seriously, what self-respecting binge-gamer wakes up before then anyhow?

See you in 12 hours…
